On the day before Yesterday, I was taking a walk with my youngest dog Liam, while My father was taking out our oldest dog Love for a walk in the rainy afternoon, real close to two Wifi towers or mobile stations, not sure what they are called...anyway, I spotted something moving in the tall grass. Looking over, I saw feather patterns, and coming closer, I spotted a Common kestrel female who struggled to take off. She flapped her wings, but the tall grass, rain, and something else seemed to cause her trouble. I decided to return my dog quickly and meeting my father inside, I got a pair of gloves on, determined to help her in case she had not flown off and needed help. If she were to be left up there unable to fly, She would have been killed for sure, We have Cats, foxes and snakes here....

We returned to the spot, and she was there, Next to a boat trailer made of metal, and the more she tried to fly, she also got deeper into a bush of thorns. She even had thorns beneth her, some hanging above her too. We brought a bag first, steady enough to handle her. I gently approach her, Wishing not to startle her nor giving her the impression of attack, She was scared with all understanding.

I gently stroke her wing, with my gloved fingers and she seemed to calm down as I took time to let her process what was going on. Once she was a bit calmer, I managed to lift her up, she got a little stuck on the back feathers by the thorns as I lifted her to try help her, but holding her carefully I just bent down a little more and she was out of the thorn mess completely. She was flapping her wings a lot, but not strong enough to take off, It was at least a sign that nothing seemed to be wrong with her wings. Then she was put in the bag, carried home, our dogs were inside in a different room, while she was then put into a transport cage we had left from our dogs, it was too big for them now but just perfect for her. Mother helped out and prepared her new spot to rest, and at this point, she seemed not able to move her legs. And she was a little stunned, tired.

We contacted help to confirm the breed and what to do, she was the breed I suspected. We were told not to give her water but bloody raw meat. Mother tried to make contact with The Bird center, but couldn´t reach them...So, we took care of her during the rest of the day and night. Me and my sister decided to call the injured female, Grace. Here is a photograph with the add of her name we gave her.

Grace The Common Kestrel female

Yesterday we saw signs of recovery, Grace ate most of the raw entrecote meat we gave her, and she was much more energic than the day before. We tried to set her free then, but she would not take off...neither did she try to. We tried to help, but she still couldn´t move her legs, so I called the animal ambulance, I told them about the situation and they were quick to aid, all I needed was reaching the bird center to get permission for her transport. And when I called them I reached them! And she was given a place, Me, mother and my sister drove her to the ambulance at the meeting spot, so they could then deliver her to the bird center for diagnosis and treatment.

We gave away the cage she was in, she had already been through a lot of stress and it would come to great use for animal rescue. They were thankful, and I agree what he told to us, I wish there were more people caring for the animals.

Grace is a priority bird since she is a protected bird breed, plus she seemed to be very young adult, like in the age of spending her first years as an adult.

The bird center then called me and told Grace was more defensive and trying to bite, and flapping her wings plus she ate, so she does show good signs of recovery. I was told she could either have gotten a concussion which caused her being unable to move her legs, but in that case she would be alright after about a week. Or...her back could be injured, I surely hope not she is hurt so bad that she cannot be saved...I will call the bird center in a few days, to know how she is doing.

UPDATE

Sadly....Poor Grace died on the 1st September, the Bird center are not sure about the cause of death, but her legs never worked...and they will examine the cause. I am very sorry for her and sad...At least she was given a chance to survive and she was not left to be eaten by animals which she would have been if she wouldn´t have been found. I will never forget her...the strong and cute bird...Rest in peace Grace. I left an Orchid flower from my Orchid on the spot I found her.
